
Feasibility study “GEO-HUB”
Highly up-to-date geodata from the “data cube”
The future use of highly up-to-date geodata from the Sentinel satellites of the Copernicus mission plays an increasingly important role in Hesse, alongside other high-volume geospatial base data.
The data volume of official geospatial base data is growing rapidly and is continuously being expanded by highly up-to-date geodata from the Sentinel-2 satellites. Every five days, the Sentinel satellites fly over Hesse and generate new data that will continue to be used in the future for many application scenarios, e.g. in the fields of environmental protection, agriculture, planning, construction, disaster management, and science and research. The Hessian State Agency for Nature Conservation, Environment and Geology (HLNUG) participates professionally in the feasibility study from the user perspective. As an official data provider, the HVBG has, in addition to satellite data, an extensive portfolio of high-volume geospatial base data (raster data) such as digital orthophotos, oriented aerial images or laser scan data, to name just a few. If the original sensor data (raw data) is also included, the data volume quickly reaches the “petabyte range”. This poses major challenges for the IT infrastructure of the Hessian state administration in terms of data storage, data processing and data provision. Against this background, the study is carried out on the basis of a scalable cloud platform (VCH) of the Hessian Central Office for Data Processing (HZD), which allows shared use of the data at a central location.
The feasibility study “GEO-HUB”, awarded to CORAmaps GmbH in cooperation with rasdaman GmbH through a tender, aims to investigate the central provision and processing of multidimensional, high-volume geodata using the novel “data cube technology” based on concrete use cases of the HVBG and the HLNUG. Here, CORAmaps GmbH, an external service provider with technical expertise in processing satellite data, takes over the technical administration of the solution, which is operated on a cloud platform of the HZD.
